There aren’t many better skaters in this year’s OHL crop than Lockhart, who skates with great dynamic posture and agility on his edges. He has elite foot speed, which allows him to stop and change directions very quickly. He gets up to top speed quickly by utilizing quick linear crossovers, and while he can get pushed around by bigger players, he’s fearless cutting to the middle of the ice and driving to the net. His quick, fluid stride allows him to hit top speed quickly and his agility allows him to maneuver through open lanes with ease. Lockhart is good at coming back and providing support for the defensemen but he can sometimes stop moving his feet and watch the play in the defensive zone. He displays high intelligence in the offensive zone, using his agility to open up passing lanes and showing the vision to hit tough cross-ice seams that lead to dangerous chances. He has good vision and is good at finding teammates with a hard, crisp pass for a scoring chance. Lockhart possesses strong puck handling abilities, showing good control at high speed and the confidence to carry the puck in transition through the neutral zone. He shows a tendency to stop moving his feet while surveying his options in the offensive end. He needs to be more consistent pushing the pace to become more efficient in the offensive end. He does a good job finding open ice to get a shot off and while his slight stature holds back his range, he has a deceptive release. Moving forward, he should work to be more aggressive getting the puck on net. He is tenacious on the forecheck, using his speed to pressure defenders and picking his spots to chase the puck very well. He has decent awareness and positioning in all three zones, but can get stuck puck watching at times in his own zone. He does a good job supporting the puck low in his end and cutting off the dot lane, but his speed and transition ability could be better-suited to the wing. Lockhart must still continue to develop his strength and consistency in his decision-making with the puck, but his ability to push the pace and drive play on a line is a strong indicator of his future offensive production.
