Lucius, selected in the first round (No. 18) by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2021 NHL Draft, is a threatening offensive player. He’s a terrific shooter who has great body control and is always shot-ready and available to receive passes. He seemed almost sneaky how he was able to lose defenders and find open ice in dangerous shooting areas. Lucius was really effective setting up on his off-wing where he was able to quickly release an accurate wrist shot or hammer a heavy slap shot one-timer. He was hampered by a serious knee injury during his time with the National Team Development Program but I saw no residual effects of this in his play. I thought he pushed the pace and attacked defenders every chance he had. In fact, his skating seemed improved since last season; his stride looked good and his acceleration seemed more explosive. Lucius’ top-end speed isn’t the fastest but he’s definitely not slow and when combined with his pretty decent edgework and agility he was able to drive wide on defensemen and take pucks hard to the net. His hands were quick with the puck, he could go forehand to backhand with ease and in tight spaces he was elusive at times while still being strong enough to bang his way through if needed. I’ve often thought that Lucius was a better passer than he’s given credit for and in this game, he showed some deception with a nice give and go on one attack and a clever slap pass to a teammate on another. Defensively, Lucius is still rounding out his game. He didn’t stand out as mistake prone or as a liability but he was less involved in his own end of the ice. His potential path is a fairly interesting one and Winnipeg may take a cautious approach and decide to give Lucius more development time at the NCAA level. On the other hand, Lucius can score and has a frightening offensive presence so it’s possible that Winnipeg will see value in getting him into the lineup sooner rather than later.
