Rolston is a speedy offensive forward with a quick, explosive stride that helps him move up the ice with speed while creating controlled zone entries. He has an excellent top speed and agility that make him dangerous off the rush. He possesses quick feet and shifty hands, which makes him quite deceptive and tough to read. His quick hands allow him to dodge poke-checks very well, too. He has some smooth edges and he moves very fluidly on the ice. He has a slick release and a powerful wrist shot with decent passing skills. He has a decent first pass and he finds teammates well with his half-decent vision, but his best assets are his skating and puck skills. He is physically mature and gets involved in many battles along the boards. He protects his puck well, which helps him cut through traffic with ease. He’s a lanky body who likely projects into a player who will eventually excel in and around the net and pick up a lot of greasy goals by banging around the goal mouth and working the cycle, wearing down defenders and dishing or receiving quick feeds. He backchecks defensively with intensity and tries to block the attack with strong stick-lifts and poke-checks. He is involved in the defensive zone, as he gets down low to help his defensemen and takes an active part of the breakout. While he uses an active stick and his body to stay engaged in his own end, he can get caught chasing the puck too often.
