“While he is a good two-way center, he is not a great skater and generates very little separation speed although he has good edge work. Foot speed is currently a concern, but his mechanics look good, so he should be fine once he adds more lower-body strength. Seems to struggle when pace and intensity turns…

AAPG Notebook: Thompson

“While he is a good two-way center, he is not a great skater and generates very little separation speed although he has good edge work. Foot speed is currently a concern, but his mechanics look good, so he should be fine once he adds more lower-body strength. Seems to struggle when pace and intensity turns up. Has a quick, accurate release on his shot, and he is an expert at using toe-drags to get around defenders and pick his spots. Protects the puck well thanks to smooth, confident hands, and can recognize when to slow down the play and wait for new opportunities to present themselves. Has excellent instincts with the puck and is a dangerous offensive player. He is an elite passer and has a great instinct when he sees a scoring opportunity. Displays awareness and hockey IQ, instinctively reading the flow of play in order to find passing lanes with the puck and find open ice and gaps in coverage without it. Always seems to be involved in the play because he thinks one step ahead. Shows nice stick work on defense and puts the effort in on the backcheck. Works hard in the corners in the defensive zone, but needs to work on his overall body strength to keep up at the next level. A high-energy player, he utilizes an aggressive brand of hockey as an active checker, creating turnovers.”
