Williams has always had a goal scoring touch and an elite shot, however his growth in the other aspects of his game has been impressive. The focal issue that plagues him is his foot speed and lack of drive. While he can think outside the box and get ahead of the play mentally, too often he appears sluggish with little power output to his skating stride and fails to have any real explosiveness to his game. He has come leaps and bounds with his on-ice awareness though and he is a player with size, speed, hands, smarts and goal scoring prowess. What separates him from his peers is his shot as he can beat any goalie from anywhere on the ice. The puck absolutely explodes off his stick and the elite velocity and elite shot placement makes him one of the best pure shooters the draft has to offer. When on, he uses his body well to protect pucks and can carry play along the well with elusive edges and quick hands. He controls the puck very well and has some definite skill that we don’t see often enough. He can seam passes through the middle of the ice and utilizes a decisive nature to make them count. Although at times irrelevant in his own zone, he flashes some play recognition to find lanes to get on the defensive side of opponents. Too often though, he is the last guy back. He has a high ceiling if he can work on his consistency.
