Doan is constantly making smart plays in all three zones of the ice. His smart positioning and anticipation make his game easily projectable to the next level. He doesn’t need much time or space to get a quick and accurate shot on net while under pressure, being able to receive the puck well, even when the pass is off target. He’s able to get into great position for scoring chances in the slot with his tenacious drive and ability to get into high-danger areas. He knows how to find open space efficiently, getting to the slot for high scoring chances often. He has quick hands that make him effective at skating through traffic with good control, making him strong at offensive zone entries. He thinks so quickly that he will catch a pass and instantly know what to do with it, having great vision to always know where his teammates are or will be. He understands the game so well, beating opponents to pucks consistently, making stick-lifts look effortless, using his body to angle off opponents along the boards to protect the puck and playing the game very responsibly. He displays strong puck control along the boards, not having difficulty making a play while protecting the puck while under pressure. He’s able to make smart decisions with the puck and find his teammates well in all zones, but he’ll need to be more consistent with his passing accuracy. Doan spends a large portion of his time in front of the net while in the offensive zone, finding open space and creating options for his teammates consistently. There are moments where Doan is hunting down pucks and making effecting stick lifts to steal possession, but other times where is less consistent in this area, showing a bit of disengagement away from the puck. He showed great effort while battling with opponents for position, tying up sticks and making it difficult to get into space. He is strong on his edges and generates good power in each stride, but does struggle with getting up to his top speed when not given much space. Even though his top speed isn’t great, he is still able to keep up with the play without it hampering his play. An overage prospect in this draft, Doan is the son of longtime NHLer Shane Doan.
