Regional Roundtable: Evaluating Western Canada’s Crop in 2020

A high-flying offensive minded defender, Edwards is among the the better skating players in the game but also one of the rawest. He plays a very shoot from the hip game that sees him be the player carrying pucks through the neutral zone. He has strong edges and accelerates smoothly, using his electric skating ability to gain speed and weave in and out of traffic laterally. Defensively, he is a prototypical small defender who uses his feet to his advantage and can get pucks up ice using his shiftiness. Despite his smaller stature, he is quite physically engaged and will make the play on body as opposed to attacking pucks when necessary. Sometimes he can struggle to maintain gaps or positioning around the net and could work on his positioning in his own end but is otherwise quick to jump on loose pucks. Often one of the more exciting and rambunctious players on the ice, he uses his free-wheeling style to create offensive chances and control puck play from his own net out. He’s got good instincts of when to step up and use his speed to play as a fourth forward but does tend to throw pucks away a fair bit and isn’t always the best at getting pucks through to the net. He is good at maintaining possession as he enters the offensive zone and waiting for help if needs it but sometimes resorts to throwing a quick but weaker shot on net if he has few options.
