An explosive butterfly goalie, Ellis drops to the ice very quickly, which allows him to block low shots and seal the ice very effectively. His athletic ability allows him to move laterally very well while adjusting to his positioning. Quick with his pads, he flashes very polished and explosive movements. While he isn’t very aggressive on the shooter, it means he rarely is caught out of position by overcommitting to shots. However, that leaves more holes in the upper portion of his net. He uses his good vision to stay positionally sound, though he needs to work on his rebound control on low shots. He can read the play well and react to the situation, at times making desperation saves that look impossible. While he is explosive when required, he also displays poise and composure. He is square to the shooter and battles through traffic and screens to see the puck. His hands are very active, especially on the glove side, where he reacts swiftly to catch pucks and not allow any rebounds in front. He has an active stick and isn’t afraid to play the puck behind his net to help his defence or poke-check pucks in front. He needs to improve on deflecting shots to the corners though and eliminating those low rebounds. Sometimes he doesn’t seal the post enough between the glove and upper part of the leg and needs to work on his angles.
