Johnston’s skating stands out in his game, as he gets up to top speed relatively quickly and loves to carry the puck through the neutral zone. He has solid foot speed and his acceleration and agility help him win puck races in the offensive zone. He’s got a great low stance and a powerful stride that allows him to gain speed quickly. In transition, he’s not afraid to attack open lanes with the puck on his stick and is able to gain speed using his crossovers. He could get better extension and power in his strides to raise his top-end speed, but that could come with increased lower-body endurance and strength. He shows good awareness away from the puck despite bouncing from center to wing at times, supporting his defenders low in his own end for a passing outlet and making good coverage reads on the back check. Johnston is good at finding open ice in the offensive zone and presenting himself as an option for a scoring chance. He’s hard on the forecheck when the puck is dumped into the zone and has the ability to win battles. Johnston’s good at coming back to provide support for his defenders but jumped a little early on some plays, eliminating himself as an option for his defender. He has good vision and had no trouble finding open passing lanes. He shows decent puck control when moving at high speed, but his handling in tight spaces and under physical pressure is lacking at times. He shows good patience and vision with the puck, using his feet to get to open ice and finding tough passing lanes without much trouble. His shot is still relatively weak, as his first option is usually to look pass and he doesn’t get great power on his release without setting his feet under him. He could be more aggressive penetrating the high-danger areas of the zone rather than deferring to the perimeter. Johnston doesn’t shy from physical play but gets moved in puck battles a little too easily at times, an issue that could impact his ability to remain a center long-term. He’ll need to improve his decision making with the puck. He tends to throw the puck into the slot without a viable option when he could have held onto it a little longer and found an open teammate.
