Chrudim, CZEMatecha favours an athletic butterfly style with quick up/down movements. He plays a controlled and calm game with a sturdy frame and the aggressive solid posture of an athlete. Matecha moves with fluidity and speed while in the butterfly and his precise edge work allows him to stay puck centered with minor positional adjustments. He maintains sightlines, battles through net-front traffic, and can steer shots to the corners with his stick and pads. He goes post-to-post with ease and accuracy and tends to set up at a more conservative depth, seldom getting to the top of his crease. His tracking stance features both the ability to look over screens or take a deep-seated crouch and find shooting lanes. Matecha will often have a more wide-legged stance but, unlike some goaltenders, he doesn’t seem to lose much off his push and it does let him shutdown his five-hole a bit quicker. His overall play on pucks bouncing around the crease was very good. He found rebounds, surrounded loose pucks, and really took away the bottom of the net. Matecha’s glove and blocker were okay, but on several shots they seemed a bit slow and whether that was a tracking issue, hand placement issue or slow reaction time is hard to say for sure, but it was enough to indicate room for improvement. He did play the puck outside his crease a couple of times but other than simply setting it up for his defensemen this seems to be an area that he didn’t excel at. In terms of a projection, Matecha is so athletic that he really intrigues me, so much so that I feel he could be an early mid-round option at the 2024 draft.
