Villeneuve is a smart two-way defenseman although he isn’t the most dependable puck mover. He is far from confident in skating backwards and will get burned by a speedy winger if he is skating backwards. While his backwards skating is a tad rocky, his lateral movements are quite sound and that is useful for him, especially when he is running the point on the power play. The one area of his game that could use some improvement is gap control, especially along the half wall. He is very good in man coverage defensively with his active stick. He is a pass first defenseman, but at times he will attempt to be a puck mover and will make costly mistakes by coughing up the puck.  While on the power play, he does a good job of carrying the puck into the offensive zone along the boards. In addition, he does an excellent job of foiling dump attempts. Not only will he foil dump attempts on the power play, but he can also do the same while at even strength. He makes a great first pass out of the zone, and when he is in possession of the puck, he is efficient at faking out his opponents. He has quality hands and manages to stick-handle well while completing tight pivots. He is more efficient at passing the puck then shooting the puck as he does have some accuracy issues, so it is good to see him be effective at moving the puck from the point when he is able.
