Miettinen has some intriguing skills in his toolbox, including being a tenacious puck pursuer providing good speed through transition. As a small winger who is always involved in the play, he’s a very good skater with above average speed, lateral agility and acceleration, allowing him to be effective at this level of hockey. He has the quickness to separate himself away from defenders and his puck skills are solid so he can also handle the puck at high speed. He has a quick wrist shot and decent finishing ability when he is around the net, sometimes choosing to shoot the puck instead of waiting a bit longer to make a better play. While he shows flashes of having crafty playmaking ability, he’s often shoved out of the center ice to the perimeter or knocked off the puck. He isn’t very strong on the puck in the offensive zone and most of his attempts on net are forced chances from perimeter, but that should improve when his decision-making develops further. Defensively, he backchecks consistently and is surprisingly strong for his size, able to compete against older and bigger opponents. His work rate and energy level are impressive, and he has a knack for getting his stick into lanes. He reads the play well and can cover the appropriate players to help his team stop the rush. While he has some two-way ability, he’ll need to work on his balance and strength in order to be more dangerous at the next level.
