An old-school, throwback type of defender, he is big and naturally strong, setting out to physically punish opposing players who enter the defensive zone. His skating and puck skills are below average, but not red flags. He has decent straight-line speed and could play a power style, but his skating is detrimental laterally as he has coverage issues and isn’t strong accelerating or keeping gaps tight. He is a powerful skater, possessing a smooth stride for his size and he makes an accurate first pass. A big body — as thick as he is tall and solidly built — he plays to his strengths as a physical presence. Not only does he look for big open-ice hits, he’s fierce in board battles and downright mean with his hacks and jabs. He can be too aggressive at times, taking himself out of the play by chasing a hit or taking a penalty. His defensive game is above average, keeping a good gap, reading the zone correctly and showing a proficiency for tying up and boxing out opponents. Really excels on the penalty kill. Keeps his head up and doesn’t throw pucks away when he gets them and puts a lot of strength into his passes. Because he doesn’t hesitate with the puck, he makes quick decisions and the right reads most of the time. A one-dimensional prospect, his offensive game seems to be nonexistent. He could carve out a role as a dedicated shutdown defender and penalty killer at the next level.
