Smilanic is a speedy two-way forward and his elite skating is a big part of his game as he loves to drive the play up the ice with speed and creates many scoring chances off the rush. He has an explosive stride and a great top speed, which helps him spark something offensively on every rush. He always keeps his feet moving and his acceleration and agility are both very good. His stride mechanics allow him to hit another gear moving through open ice in transition and he possesses some quick mitts to match his foot speed. He has an excellent puck control and a high-end vision, which allows him to make plays at high speed. He’s able to put the puck in the back of the net thanks to his quick release and accurate wrist shot. He really leans into his shots, which pop off his stick like a rocket. He shoots from anywhere on the ice, though despite having a good shot, it means he is often settling for less dangerous chances. He’s very involved in all three zones but needs to stay focused when in his own end and keep his feet moving. He backchecks with intensity and blocks plays from behind with his great stick work. He has an active stick in the defensive zone, and he gets down low to help his defenseman. He still lacks strength to win his physical battles, but he should be able to get better in that department as he matures.
