10 Takeaways from Round 1 of the 2020 NHL Draft

Mukhamadullin is an incredibly raw prospect who flashes some high-end tools, and that combination is sure to make him a polarizing figure. His combination of size and skill is ideal for a defenseman, with a big frame, long stick, extended skating strides and fluid mobility in all directions. He is quick and springs off his edges into a long quick stride but could add elusive features to his game to develop a puck rush element to his game. He is excellent at closing gaps and taking space away from opponents and does a good job of disrupting plays in tight without taking penalties. Needs to rise his compete level and play more aggressive in his own zone but covers sticks of opposing forwards well in front of the net to prevent them from deflecting pucks and scoring on rebounds. Offensively, he owns an absolute bomb from the point that he can cleanly unload as a one-timer. He’s got some presence with the puck thanks to some prowess in playmaking, using both sides of his body to jockey for free ice and showing a creative element and some skilled, soft hands. On the downside, however, his hockey sense is sorely lacking. His decision-making with the puck on his stick is also suspect, as he is prone to soft turnovers and throwing the puck away despite having time and better options available. Doesn’t exude confidence as a puck-carrier and usually defers carrying duties to others.
