Tarnstrom is a solid two-way center who still needs to work on his speed and physics when it comes to skating. His problem is that he sometimes struggles to keep up with a high-tempo game and is slow when it comes to acceleration and longer distance plays in all three zones. His offensive game is simple so he doesn´t make that many mistakes but could be better at winning faceoffs. Decent puck handling and passes that often hit the stick. His offensive positioning is solid, and he often finds himself in the right place at the right time to make plays. He seems very confident with the puck and looks really calm with all his decisions at both ends of the ice. He likes to challenge defenders in the offensive zone and isn’t afraid to try and make plays happen. He takes responsibility at both ends of the ice and will help his defenders by covering for them at both ends. He is not afraid to block shots, though he needs to be stronger physically to better handle the play around his own net and along the boards. When his team gets the puck in defensive zone, he makes himself playable or sets up wings with accurate passes to start an attack going back the other way. Overall, he plays a calm game and while he isn’t a flashy player, his upside is strong if he can start rounding out some of his skills.
