Who to watch at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup

An all-around solid skater, Kokkonen is mobile and good at changing directions. Efficient with the puck, he’s adept at creating multiple controlled zone exits and plays a steady and smart two-way game. He keeps his shifts short and doesn’t make many glaring mistakes in the defensive zone. He is also physically mature for his age and can take or receive a hit well. His hockey IQ and awareness of the flow of play allows him to consistently be in the right place at the right time. He shows the mobility to stick with quick forwards and the strength to battle bigger opponents. He sometimes leaves his position to attempt a big hit and often loses the puck when he tries quick cuts or dekes around opponents. His strong skating allows him to take risks offensively and he’s able to recover from mistakes by hustling back to his position. Due to good form and smooth edgework, he’s always a threat to break away and make end-to-end rushes that result in scoring chances. He’s a confident puck carrier and he’s able to fire off quick and accurate passes to teammates. Can occasionally wow the crowd with a fancy pass that sets up a prime scoring opportunity. He has a quick slap-shot release with a short wind-up and likes to shoot and gets pucks through traffic. He already plays a very mature and professional-style game.
