A large, physical presence on the blueline. Skating needs a lot of additional work due to his very heavy feet, which makes him awkward and slow in transition. Too much energy is spent in the vertical plane as he pushes through each stride upwards, as opposed to forwards. Pivots and first steps limit his ability to take efficient routes to the puck carrier. A lower stance could allow more lateral mobility and instead of an opponent pushing off his inside shoulder, he could deny lanes to the net. Footing falls off his toes and although he can work himself out of some jams, his long reach masks his inefficiencies. Tends to play all over the ice at the expense of his own positioning, which he needs to settle down. Gap control is admirable, and his intensity is effective when able to knock opponents off the puck. Is able to accurately pass to teammates, but lacks variation. Able to read pressure and circle the puck differently, but his hands and agility aren’t the best. Opponents are able to get their sticks on the puck. Possesses a can of a shot. Still, a very strong and acutely defensive players that most teams seek out. Understands the game positionally and has the tools to separate pucks from opponents. There is a ball of clay ready to be molded with him.
