A smart defender who plays on his toes and wants to be involved, but not a good enough skater yet to overcome his small stature. Undersized defensemen usually need all three of sense, skating and puck skill to succeed in the NHL, and he isn’t high-end in any of these categories. His feet are quick and there’s growth potential to use it to be a consistent attacker from the back end and competent defender. His gap control is above average and he is competitive in his own zone, but he still has a lot of flaws in his defensive game. He tends to make mistakes under pressure and his mental lapses often turn into scoring chances for opponents. He will get better at playing the net and gaining body positioning in board battles as he ages, but right now he can be overwhelmed. He is good at knowing when to drop back to assess play on the breakout and can throw subtle gestures to mask intentions before finding his passing option or taking space with his feet. He’s factoring in on the secondary powerplay unit and uses a healthy mix of his playmaking acumen and quick shot as a back up alternative. He does have a good taste for how to be creative but doesn’t really offer anything cutting edge yet or bring a consistent element in how he protects pucks. He still has potential to mature and add strength to his body, which will improve his game in the future.
