Markkanen is an active and poised goaltender who is very composed in the way he plays the position, but if you need him to make a sprawling save, he can do that, too. His energy level always seems to be the same, whether it’s at the beginning of the period or at the end of the game. He is flexible in his movements and uses his athleticism to make saves as well as his solid positioning. He doesn’t go down when he shouldn’t and reads the play well. He displays quick lateral movement, which allows him to arrive on time on deflected shots and make saves others wouldn’t be able to.  However, sometimes he can be too rash on occasions, lacking judgement on how to play the puck at times. He could stand to cover the puck more in frantic situations to better give his teammates a breather when things get tough. His technique to catch pucks with his glove as he snaps it without giving any rebound, even with high velocity shots, is impressive. He is hard to beat up top and goes post-to-post very well, snapping pucks out of the air with few rebounds. He is a solid skater and moves his feet well, always on balance and aware of where he is in his net. He already covers much of he net with his size and that should get even better as he fills out his frame. He has a high compete level and should be easily coachable.
