September Notebook – Tessler

Dion is a great offensive defenseman who loves to support the attack and jump into plays to surprise and overwhelm the opposition. He possesses good agility to dodge forecheckers, but he lacks the acceleration and top speed to be a threat as a puck-rushing defenseman and will need to work on his overall skating. He exerts effort in the defensive end, but he still has a bit of difficulties. Against rushes, he showcases good stick work to disrupt opponents, but his lack of quickness and speed allows quick attackers to blow past him on the outside, frequently forcing him to take penalties as he works from behind. He is not scared to get physical and he can win some of his battles, but he often gets overwhelmed by tougher rivals. He is a great offensive-oriented defenseman with a very interesting upside, but he will need to improve his defensive game to step up to the next level. His best asset is his incredible offensive instincts, which he displays on almost every rush and offensive possession. He acts like a fourth forward on the offense, pushing plays and getting very deep on the attack. What distinguishes him from other offensive-oriented rearguards though, is that his risk-taking is often calculated when he jumps into the action is exceptional. His shot is not the most dangerous, but thanks to his great instincts and positioning, he gets to dangerous areas and makes himself a goalscoring threat on practically every play.
