Goncalves has really taken a jump in his draft season and has drawn some interest as a bit of an offensive late bloomer. He doesn’t play a flashy style of game or possess high end tools, but he has the awareness and hockey IQ to get himself in prime scoring positions or make smart splays on the fly. His footwork and speed are solid, and he can use his acceleration to create separation on the rush. He gets around the ice effectively but isn’t overly strong, which limits power output that inhibits dynamic edge work or transitions. He has good cohesion with the puck and is quick in how he reads and reacts to a scenario to make a strong power move to eat up more ice or find a passing lane. He has good hand-eye coordination to get his stick on pucks around the net and likes to drive the crease, showing a preference to go to his backhand. He’s got a decent shot, which is accurate but inconsistent in delivery as he struggles to get power behind it at times. He needs to get stronger and would benefit immensely by adding some weight and using his body to be more assertive down low or on net drives. Defensively, he isn’t overly proactive but tries to get his stick into lanes and shows a scrappy mentality. Overall, he is a raw player who possesses a foundation of skills, but he needs to finesse his game.
