Huge, athletic goaltender with a competitive mindset, Portillo is able to take up a lot of the net both in size and confidence. He talks a lot on the ice, both with his teammates and at opponents who get close to him. Composed and calm in the net, he can have that ‘unbeatable’ vibe at times, which is a quality his teammates and coaches love. He uses his size very well to cut off angles, has quick reflexes and likes to play large in the net. Sometimes he comes very far out of his net to challenge opposing players with the puck in an effort to take away their options. He is an excellent stick handler for a goaltender. He can make strong passes to quickly start an attack from his own zone. He doesn’t have the typical butterfly-style for his size and can be standing up for quite a while instead of just sitting in the net and relying on his size to do all the work. Displaying good puck tracking through traffic, he rarely gets surprised by pucks and is seemingly always in position. Possessing a very strong glove hand, he can flash the leather to make fantastic saves with it. Although he doesn’t have any apparent weaknesses, he sometimes needs to bounce back quicker after a goal. That being said, he is usually very focused in between the pipes.
