Powell is an excellent skater who doesn’t have high-end top speed, but he has good edges and accelerates quickly. His stride is compact and concise, using quick feet to work in and out of small spaces. His skating allows him to play a solid defensive game and when skating backwards, he really dives into his skates and is fluid. Added strength will be key for him as he is agile and light on his feet, but when opponents catch him, it’s easy to knock him off his feet or push him out of the play. He keeps tight gaps through the neutral zone and meets attackers at the blueline, preventing clean entries often. His stickwork aids in breaking up plays and allows him to force pucks loose and jump on them to move up ice quickly. He can skate the puck through the neutral zone, leading to controlled zone exits and entries. Good coverage defensively and uses his partner well while showing support.   As an offensive player, he allows high-end skill players to do their jobs and facilitates the puck. He will likely never be an offensive focal point, but he does an effective job of making sure the puck is on the sticks of his playmakers. His shot is just average, and he needs to add power to it as it’s currently not an offensive threat. Comfortable with the puck on his stick and can drag and wait out defenders to make plays but there is no rush in his game.
