FC releases Spring Ranking for 2019 NHL Draft

A puck-moving defenceman, Helleson skates smoothly in all three zones. He has flown under the radar, but there’s a lot to like about his game. Very mobile and quick on his skates, he can escape opposing forecheckers with ease. He shows a very advanced, mature understanding of how to use his big frame to be reliable and effective in his own end. His positioning, stick work, board play and defensive awareness are all strengths. He makes smart plays in tight spots and when under pressure. He shows poise and confidence and usually makes the right decisions without being forced into turnovers. He always seems to know where the puck should go and plays with great vision and a high hockey IQ. Does a good job receiving and distributing pucks cleanly. One perk that remains somewhat hidden is his puck control. Beyond stickhandling well to evade pressure in the defensive zone, he can also surprise and undress opponents at the offensive blue-line with some slick moves. He is known for his abilities to move the puck along the blue-line and while he doesn’t have eye-popping offensive stats, he still contributes to the play. He’ll never be a big offensive producer at the professional level, but projects well as a minute-munching defensive defender who also chips in the occasional points. He has a big frame that should start to fill out as he develops his strength.
