Zlodeyev’s skating is a huge red flag at this point in his development as he has a very splayed stride and drags his feet constantly. Because of his tendency to drag his feet, he is plagued with balance issues and hiccups in transitions. His high motor and footspeed make up for it somewhat at this level, but it would need major improvement if he were to make it to the NHL. His smarts, quickness, puck skills and work ethic are all solid, and that combination helps him be a positive possession player most of the time at this point in his development. However, there’s a difference between maintaining possession of the puck and converting it into scoring chances, and he has trouble with the latter. He could also use some added size and strength, as he has a very slight frame and despite possessing a willingness to battle, he can be easily dispatched in physical confrontations. While his lack of size, speed and high-end skill would normally be disqualifiers to be drafted, his effort level and smarts drag him back into the conversation. He makes the most of his limited tools and while he’s not a pretty player, he is a grinder who wins battles through sheer force of will. On the defensive side of things, he tracks the play well enough and puts in an honest effort, but his lack of strength and limited range will hold him back from being a standout in this area.
