Ovichinnikov is known for his energetic style of play and offensive exploits but at times can find himself lost in the play. He has decent quickness in his first stride but sometimes loses foot races due to his choppy, short style of skating. Edge wise, he is light on his feet and can find space thanks to approaching plays at his top speed and deviating quickly, but there’s room to grow. His hands are quick, and he has a good amount of skill, but he sometimes tries to speed the play up beyond his control and loses the puck. He has a sense of where he needs to be on the ice to be the most serviceable and makes quality plays when he has some extra time on his hands. He does a good job and opening passing lanes for his teammates and as a shooter, he displays an ability to get into prime scoring areas to finish off plays. He could shoot the puck more though, especially with his quick-strike ability. He sometimes has a hard time hitting passes consistently as he can get caught rushing the puck off his stick and not biding time for open ice, but he does make some quality plays off the rush when given a little extra time. His play away from the puck leaves a lot to be desired and he isn’t a physically dominating player. Defensively, he is always willing to help his defenders in his own end and keeps his head on a swivel.
