Teams looking for a malleable defensive minded player may find interest in Palivko, a big body who moves relatively effectively, transitioning well forward but could improve on his power in reverse.  The acceleration to his skating stride doesn’t set him apart, but route selection and his power in his stride can make him sneak up on players once he gets momentum. There aren’t too many defenders who have the reach and size and use it well. His ability to move the puck side-to-side and maximize his reach advantage, his vision up the ice, the way he uses his teammate below the goal line defensively, the way he closes off gaps with his stick and then transitioning into pinning with his body are all pluses. He’s got some simple tools and puck skills. Though he could be more elusive and even stronger on pucks at times. He picks his spots well and can make some good outlet passes. He is good at staying inside his man in net front battles, and even though he is a guy who would be weaker if he got caught running around, there is little to his game that results in him being caught off guard and out of position. Offensively, he is a crisp passer with a quick release on short passes, often hitting his target. He typically doesn’t use his shot much and seems to pass on opportunities to shoot more. Overall, he is smart and effective and uses his body well, playing a stand-up physical game.
