A smooth-skating defenseman who likes to move the puck up the ice, he has the mobility to create space for himself and teammates. He has good feet but his puck movement and game sense with the puck could use some improvement. He has a sturdy base and is solid on his feet, but he lacks top end defensive awareness. He’s solid when dealing with an attacker 1-on-1 but can lose his mark when dealing with a weaving attack and he can be too puck focused when dealing with odd man situations. His size works against him a bit in the defensive zone as he gets muscled off a lot of pucks but his compete level is high. He is strong at angling opponents to the wall and keeps gaps tight enough to eliminate high danger zone plays within his control. When play gets stagnant and zone time is established, he is forced to match up he is essentially dependent upon his stick work and positioning to defend. He can drive play from the back end and is impressive from his own zone breaking out the puck. He has a heads-up mentality and finds holes in opposing teams to move the puck effectively with good accuracy and touch. He is active off the offensive line and although the points haven’t come, he has good enough vision and tools to be able to set up teammates or find lanes. He seems to lock into a thought process though and needs to make better decisions under pressure.
