McCartney is a hard-nosed winger with speed and quickness, he can separate himself from opponents and win foot races off the starting line. His game was once all about linear speed and being a bull on the puck, but not only has he gained another gear in his top end speed that sets him apart, he is also stronger on his edges and uses lateral components to attack with more diversity and subtlety. Plays a feisty up-tempo game, drives hard to the net and plays in the gritty areas. Empties the tank routinely every shift. While his offensive ceiling isn’t high, he has improved his stick skills and the quickness and accuracy of his puck movement.  He wins board battles with his physicality and constantly makes his way to the net for tips and rebounds while throwing his weight around. Although he doesn’t get flashy, he works the ice with quick and simple plays. Passes are short and on point. His shot is most effective within the hash marks and quickness is key for him as the precision and power is still growing into his release. Defensively, he plays an honest game and will lay his body down to block pucks or get into heated board battles. He has started to develop his overall game and is playing with more awareness, but his playmaking skills need to be refined. While he has some rash tendencies to his game, he is a rare mix of sandpaper and speed.
