Johannesson is an offensive defenseman with skating as his best attribute. His movement is smooth and fluid, and he is agile and light on his feet, allowing him to make quick directional changes. His lack of leg strength shows in his first few steps, but once he gets going, he can be very elusive. Because of his elite skating skill, he has no problem to go from his own zone to the offensive zone with the puck on his stick without getting interrupted. Like many defenders with a penchant for offense, his defensive game could use some work and he need to be stronger in his own zone, especially around the net to help his goalie. He does keep his feet moving in his own end and likes to keep an active stick to create turnovers and jump on loose pucks.  He can struggle physically in board battles and there are times where he can get caught out of position in his own end, which should improve as he continues to develop his game. His offensive awareness is a big strength and he’s patient with the puck. He can be very creative at creating space for himself and his teammates, with crafty passing and slippery movements. He shoots often with a hard, dangerous wrist shot, but doesn’t really have a powerful slap shot. He’s a very intelligent player, often making good decisions with the puck. He’s not a physical presence on the ice and can often be pushed off easily with the puck.
