Belanger is a smart, two-way defender who understands what the opposition wants to do offensively having been a former forward prior to switching early in his teenage years. His skating is good but not outstanding; his edges are strong, and he is able to twist and turn to elude a forecheck, but he sometimes struggles to win a tight foot race as his top speed is lacking. He lacks balance and can get easily pushed off the puck and isn’t overly agile. When defending, he does a good job of clearing the front of the net but doesn’t overpower players. He has good positioning and outworks players in tight. He has an active stick and gets into passing lanes, but he could do so with more consistency. While defending the rush, he sits back on his heels and allows the opposition to take the blue line but cuts down the passing lane and keeps the attacker to the outside. If he can learn to be aggressive a second or two earlier, his defensive game will become a major strength. He can be a bit slow when it comes to his positioning. Offensively, he has a good shot but doesn’t locate it with consistency. He doesn’t try to bomb the puck, rather opting to fire a shot through a screen. He is strong passer but not a spectacular playmaker. He identifies open players and gets the puck to them but won’t make a creative play. He’s a safe player who makes the right play rather than the spectacular play.
