Svechnikov added to Russia prelim roster

Forward Andrei Svechnikov, the top-ranked forward for the 2018 NHL Draft, has been added to Russia’s preliminary roster for the 2018 IIHF World Championship.

The tournament will be held from Dec. 26, 2017 – Jan. 5, 2018, in Buffalo, New York.

Svechnikov, second in Future Considerations’ Fall ranking for the 2018 NHL Draft, was one of 10 North American-based Russian skaters added to the preliminary roster Monday, according to Igor Eronko of Sport-Express.

He has 11 goals and 17 points in 13 games as a rookie with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League. Last season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League, the 17-year-old was named to the league’s All-Rookie Team, First All-Star Team and was named Rookie of the Year after recording 58 points (29 goals, 29 assists) in 48 games.

Svechnikov has previously represented Russia at the World Under-17 Challenge, World Under-18 Championship, World Junior A Challenge and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial.
