Sharks win 2024 NHL Draft Lottery, right to select Celebrini

The San Jose Sharks have won the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery, and the option to welcome Macklin Celebrini into the fold.

Celebrini is the projected No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft.

The Sharks by way of the worst winning percentage in the NHL in the 2023-24 season, had the highest odds at winning the No. 1 pick in the NHL Draft Lottery. The Sharks (19-54-9) finished 32nd in the NHL with a 47 points, and had a 22.5% shot at the No. 1 pick.

The Chicago Blackhawks (23-53-6), who finished 31st with 51 points, will select with the No. 2 pick. The Blackhawks had the second-best odds, at 13.5%, of winning the lottery. The Anaheim Ducks (27-50-5) will select third after having an 11.5% chance of winning the lottery.

The lottery unfolded as the odds suggested.

Celebrini was the youngest player in NCAA Division I men’s hockey this season, and became the youngest winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the top NCAA men’s hockey player. He finished second among NCAA players with 32 goals and third with 64 points in 38 games with Boston University.

He also added Hockey East Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors, joining Jack Eichel (2015), Paul Kariya (1993) and Brian Leetch (1987) as the only players to win both awards in the same season.

Celebrini, who had eight points (four goals, four assists) in five games for Canada at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, had been with Canada in pre-tournament activities will not participate in the 2024 IIHF World Championship. He instead has returned to North America and was in attendance for the lottery.
