Schaefer among trio of draft eligibles set for Canada’s World Junior camp
Matthew Schaefer is among three members of the 2025 NHL Draft class that will attend Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp for the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship.
The camp is set for Dec. 10-13 at TD Place in Ottawa, ON.
Schaefer, No. 3 in FCHockey’s Preliminary ranking for the 2025 draft, has 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) in 14 games for Erie in the Ontario Hockey League this season, and is coming off a standout performance for Team CHL at the CHL USA Prospects Challenge in late November.
The defenseman has previously won gold with Canada at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, 2024 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, and with Canada White at the 2023 World Under-17 Challenge.
Schaefer will be joined in camp by forward Porter Martone and goaltender Jack Ivankovic.
Martone, a right winger, has 47 points (18 goals, 29 assists) in 23 games for Brampton in the OHL. The 6-foot-3, 208-pound winger is tied for third in the Canadian Hockey League in points this season.
Ivankovic, the top-ranked goaltender for the 2025 draft, has a 3.28 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 18 games for Brampton in the CHL. He, like Schaefer, is a three-time gold medalist for Canada.
Gavin McKenna, eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft, was also invited to the camp.
McKenna, 17, leads the entire CHL with 55 points (18 goals, 37 assists) in 27 games for Medicine Hat in the Western Hockey League.
