Rossi claims Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy

Marco Rossi was named the recipient of the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy on Friday as the Ontario Hockey League’s top scorer this season.

Rossi, No. 8 in Future Considerations’ Spring ranking for the 2020 NHL Draft, had a Canadian Hockey League-leading 120 points (39 goals, 81 assists) in 53 games with the Ottawa 67s.

“Rossi is an incredibly intelligent player who plays a consistently well-rounded game,” Future Considerations head Eastern scout Dylan Galloway said. “His reading of the play, compete, and commitment to good habits allows him to be an incredibly dangerous offensive player, in addition to his defensive prowess.”

Rossi accumulated 34 multi-point performances, including 23 games of three-or-more points and amassed a plus-69 rating, in 2019-20. His 2.14 point-per-game pace led the OHL, and is the highest such figure by the league’s scoring champion since Patrick Kane reached 2.50 with the London Knights in 2006-07.

“Rossi has silky mitts that help him create space for himself and he has the ability to take the puck to the net or make a nice passing play,” Galloway said. “In any other draft Rossi could be a first overall talent. Regardless he’ll be a special player to watch for years to come.”

Rossi joins other recent OHL standouts to receive the award in their draft eligible seasons, including Dylan Strome (2015), Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin (2010), John Tavares (2009) and Patrick Kane (2007).

He is the first recipient of European descent in the award’s 74-year history.

Rossi, from Austria, has 185 points (68 goals, 117 assists) in just 109 regular-season games since being selected by Ottawa with the No. 18 pick in the 2018 CHL Import Draft. He was named to the OHL’s second all-rookie team in 2018-19.
