Power named USHL Defenseman of the Year

Owen Power has won USHL Defenseman of the Year honours, the league announced Friday.

Power, a top prospect ahead of the 2021 NHL Draft, led the league in scoring by a defenseman with 40 points (12 goals, 28 assists) in 45 games with the Chicago Steel.

“Owen really took off this season,” said Future Considerations’ USHL-based scout Ray Napientek. “In his rookie season in the USHL, you could see the talent and IQ was just cracking the surface but he needed to adjust to playing at a higher level. This season, his confidence and game went through the roof.”

Power, who broke into the USHL as a 15-year-old rookie last season with a Tier I USHL record with 11 goals, was also named to the All-USHL First Team on Thursday.

The University of Michigan commit tied for first in the league in power play goals (five), second in goals, and fourth in assists. He finished the season with 10 multi-point games, including an impressive three-point performance (two goals, one assist) on February 26.

“His time at the University of Michigan will be great for his development as he plays against older competition,” Napientek said. “I try not to play the comparison game but he reminds me of Victor Hedman with his overall hockey skills. He’s the type of defenseman that can take over games with both his offense and defense.”
