Lafreniere named Paul-Dumont Trophy recipient
Alexis Lafreniere was named recipient of the Paul-Dumont Trophy as the QMJHL Personality of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.
Lafreniere also captured the award, which recognizes individuals who had a positive media impact and helped improve the league’s image throughout the season, last season.
“He has done nothing but impress this season, solidifying himself as the top prospect of his class with incredible performances at every level,” Quebec-based FC Hockey scout Andy Lehoux said. “Displaying his amazing hockey IQ, spectacular stick-handling abilities and sensational playmaking skills, he quickly became one of the most exciting prospect to watch.
“His dominance at both the international and junior level was as entertaining as it was impressive, leaving countless fans and scouts in awe with some of his accomplishment. His remarkable development was just as thrilling, as he polished his game into an outstanding playmaker and one of the most electrifying prospects in recent years.”
Lafreniere, the consensus top pick for the 2020 draft, led the QMJHL in scoring with 112 points (35 goals, 77 assists) in 52 games for a points-per-game average of 2.15. The 18-year-old, who was named Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year last season, also helped Canada to gold at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in January.
He topped FC Hockey’s Spring ranking for the 2020 draft.
Dawson Mercer, No. 12 in FC Hockey’s Spring ranking for the 2020 draft, also was nominated for the award.
