Gavin McKenna has historic scoring run come to an end
A historic scoring streak from Gavin McKenna has ended.
McKenna was held off the scoresheet in Game 2 of the Western Hockey League Final on Sunday, halting the 17-year-old’s impressive 54-game run.
The loss, 6-2 to Spokane, was the first time the phenom had been held pointless since Brandon shut out Medicine Hat on Nov. 2.
“The point streak itself is more of a representation of the kind of trajectory he’s on and how the WHL isn’t much of a challenge for him,” FCHockey scout Kareem Elshafey said. “Whether the streak reached the number it did or not doesn’t change the fact that he’s on his way to being a slam dunk first overall pick next season. It does, however, put his season in perspective, illustrating how impressive it was for a D-1 season.”
McKenna has been downright dominant this season, amassing 138 points (40 goals, 98 assists) in the 186 days between his blankings The Whitehorse, YK product set the record for the longest point streak in the WHL this century back in March. He beat the record, a tie of 35 games between Connor Bedard and Logan Stankoven in 2022-23, with a pair of assists against Red Deer to reach 36 games with at least a point.
Two games later, McKenna set a personal record with seven points in a 7-1 win and continued his rise up the modern-day Canadian Hockey League streak list. With points in 38 consecutive games, he passed former Rimouski star Sidney Crosby for second place on the regular-season point streak list since 2000. McKenna continued his streak into the postseason and passed another Rimouski legend, Brad Richards, when it hit 46 games.
McKenna claimed first place on the modern CHL combined regular season and playoff game point streak leaderboard by reaching 51 games. With a five-assist performance in Game 2 of the WHL Eastern Conference Final, he passed former Quebec Remparts winger Alex Radulov’s record set in 2006.
“He is obviously extremely special, he’s an electrifying talent,” FCHockey scout Austin Broad said. “The word generational really is used far too often, but I do think it’s not a stretch to use that with McKenna. I do not think it is a stretch to say that if you ranked the #1 overall picks of the last five drafts, 2025 included, McKenna would be no. 1 — which is more of a credit to McKenna than anything.”
McKenna posted sensational production totals in the regular season, as his 129 points (41 goals, 88 assists) in 56 games paced CHL katers eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft.
Ryan Roobroeck of Niagara in the Ontario Hockey League finished in a distant second place with 87 points (41 goals, 46 assists), and defenseman Xavier Villeneuve of Blainville-Boisbriand in the Quebec Maritimes Junior League rounded out the top three with 62 points (12 goals, 50 assists) in 61 games.
Washington Capitals prospect Andrew Cristall (132 points in 57 games) and 2025 draft-eligible center Michael Misa (134 points in 65 games) were the only players in the CHL to post higher point totals.
McKenna, the presumptive first overall pick in the 2026 draft, is giving fans plenty to look forward to as he enters his draft year.
