Garand nominated for Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy

Goaltender Dylan Garand of the Kamloops Blazers, eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft, has been named Western Conference Scholastic Player of the Year and nominee for the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy, the Western Hockey League announced Thursday.

The Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy for WHL Scholastic Player of the Year is presented annually to the WHL player who has excelled both in the classroom and on the ice during the WHL Regular Season.

Garand, maintained an overall academic average of 96.5 percent and is set to graduate from Valleyview Secondary School with honors in June.

In his core Grade 12 classes, Garand maintained a 93 percent average to provide leadership among his teammates in the classroom. The 17-year-old has completed 16 total courses in his Grade 11 and 12 years of study.

“Dylan is respected by his teammates as well as our staff, both as an excellent academic student and he provides excellent leadership,” Victor Bifano, Academic Advisor for the Blazers, said in a release. “He has managed his academics and hockey with a profound degree of maturity.”

Garand, who helped Kamloops to its first BC Division title since 2012, had a 28-10-2-1 record with a 2.21 goals against average and .921 save percentage with four shutouts in 42 games.

In 73 career regular-season games, Garand is 41-19-4-2 with a 2.48 goals against average and .914 save percentage.

Jakob Brook of the Regina Pats, also eligible for the 2020 draft, is the Eastern Conference nominee for the award.
