The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery date has been set for May 5

The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery is coming soon.

The NHL Draft Lottery, which will determine which team has the no. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, will be held at NHL Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey on May 5. The time of the NHL Draft Lottery, which will be aired on ESPN in the United States and Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada, will be announced at a later date.

The lottery will determine the order of selection for the first 16 picks, including the first overall pick, for the teams that failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Teams finishing last, 32nd overall, in the NHL at the conclusion of the regular season have a 25.5% chance of earning. The no. 1 pick in the 2025 draft. The team sitting at 31st holds a 13.5% chance at the top pick. Third-last, 30th overall, has an 11.5% shot at the pick.

A team can only move up a maximum of 10 spots from their finishing position, meaning only the bottom 11 teams have a shot at the no. 1 overall pick. Additionally, teams can only win the NHL Draft Lottery twice in a five-year span.

In the past six lotteries, from 2019 to 2024, only 50% of the teams with the highest draft lottery odds retained the no. 1 pick.

As such, the San Jose Sharks have the best odds of winning the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery and the rights to pick first.

Matthew Schaefer of Erie in the Ontario Hockey League topped FCHockey’s Spring ranking for the 2025 draft. The 17-year-old defenseman had 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 17 games before his season was ended by a broken clavicle sustained representing Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. He also had six points (two goals, four assists) to help Canada to gold at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Michael Misa of Saginaw in the OHL and James Hagens of Boston College in the NCAA are ranked second and third, respectively.

The 2025 NHL Draft will be held at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The first round will be held June 27, and rounds 2-7 on June 28.
