2021 NHL Draft: 5 under-the-radar Russian players to watch

A speedy winger with a nose for the puck. Shumilin is relentless on the forecheck, harassing opponents and disrupting their breakouts every time they had the puck in their own zone. Defensively he holds his own, he keeps his head up and looks for opportunities to deflect or pick off passes. His skating is solid, he has good edges that allow him to change direction while maintaining his top-end speed. Shumilin likes to carry the puck in transition and with his speed and agility he is effective on zone exits and entries. He needs to work on his IQ in order to be really effective, at times he has issues communicating with his teammates and seems to try and rotate between playing the wing and playing center mid-game. The raw potential and offensive ability are evident in his game, and as a late 2002 birthdate he’s a little bit older than the rest of the class which will cause his name to slip down the draft board. If a team wants to take a flier on a player who needs some work but has the potential to grow into a fun and exciting player with the puck on their stick then Shumilin will be on their radar in the final round of the draft.
