A big-bodied defender who can use his size and mobility to impact both ends of the ice. Mast has a strong two-step burst that allows him to get up to his top-speed really quickly, he’s decent in the transition game and has a decent shot that he can get off when jumping into the rush. A confident player, he trusts his instincts and does not hesitate with his decision making. He knows when to pinch in and hold the offensive blueline or when to stay back and transition to defense. With his size he’s good at maintaining gap control and keeping defenders to the outside while defending the rush. Mast needs to learn to use his size a little more effectively, you want a player with his physical stature to play with a little more edge, especially in front of his own net. He does a good job of clearing out the crease and allowing his goalies to see the puck but if he can consistently use his size in the defensive zone he would become a much more consistent player in his own zone. Mast uses his reach to help bail him out if he gets beat, but that’s not something you want to see become a habit. NHL teams typically love players with his size and ability to move around the ice.
