Once a reactionary goaltender, he has evolved his game to show control of the net with athleticism and flexibility. While he possesses an unorthodox goalie stance, he plays big in the net and shows solid net coverage. There’s a lot to like in his progress, notably that his composure in the crease has tamed how he moves and seems to be allowing the puck to come to him instead of moving erratically. He plays well positionally and consistently displays laser puck focus, often squaring up shots and flashing a strong glove, blocker and lower net coverage on initial and follow up shots. He isn’t highly dynamic but can get into his butterfly quickly and is strong on his edges to move with the play. He excels at finding pucks in feet and in this game, he seemed to feed off the contact and muck in his crease. His rebound control does need a bit of work and consistency is key to finding that niche to stop low shots. He has a habit of making routine saves look adventurous and it seems to stem from his passivity when making saves. Instead of directing the puck away he waits for the puck to hit him. Mentally, he walks the line between battle and compete level versus calm and focused very well. There seems to be no stress in his game, and he doesn’t get excitable under pressure. He’s not flashy, but a guy that seems mouldable and has the right demeanor, physical tools and composure.
