Poirier is a great combination of pure athleticism and size. He is quick to recover and can make spectacular saves. He has strong basics and can get out of the “normal save pattern” to reach for pucks on quick plays just like Carey Price does. He’s got great lateral movements and is rarely out of position and always square to pucks, thanks to his great puck tracking. He can explode from the post to the top of his crease on the opposite side in a split second to get ready for a potential shot. Because of great tracking and positioning combined with his size, he covers the net well and often makes saves look easy. He displays a wide range of skills from his feet movement to his hand-eye coordination, which help him with rebound control and being set before shots arrive. Great tracking and positioning allow him to be set before shots are fired and he rarely looks unprepared. When the shot is in the chest area, he absorbs them very well, letting few rebounds on the ice for opposing players. When shots are out of the chest area, he is very good at redirecting the pucks in the corners with his blocker. He can execute well from either standing up on his feet or while being down in butterfly position. His compete level is very high; he fights for all his shots and keeps himself active, always ready for the next play.
