AAPG Notebook: Chesnutt

Short, quick strides and quick feet give Robertson good acceleration and elusiveness in open ice. A shifty player whose puck skills and smarts make up for his smaller frame and lack of physicality, he oozes offensive potential as he combines an elite skillset with extreme confidence in his ability to put the puck in the net. He is constantly creating scoring chances and has great instincts and awareness. Confident and brazen with the puck on his stick, he has the patience to wait for a teammate to get open in a good scoring area. Good one-on-one stick handler who can beat defenders cleanly and has the speed to find open lanes to the net. Volume shooter who isn’t afraid to throw the puck on net from anywhere, but sacrifices power and strength for a quick release. He has lightning quick hands and shows an ability to freeze goaltenders by moving his hands to a shooting position just before a clever pass to an open teammate. Uses his wheels to pressure opposing players on the backcheck, but doesn’t engage physically without the puck. His physical limitations are more noticeable defensively as he provides very little resistance and seems to concede defeat before a battle even starts. Despite his smaller frame, he skates hard and battles in the corners and doesn’t let opponents get under his skin. Needs to improve his physical game.
