Hlinka Gretzky 2018 Notebook: Aleong

Excellent skater with long, powerful strides and good foot speed for someone as physically developed as him. Good agility on his edges and light enough on his feet to remain effective breaking up cycle plays in the defensive zone. He is punishing down low and makes attackers think twice when attacking the net front. Confidence with the puck can be inconsistent, but makes a nice breakout pass and shows the ability to carry the puck to gain zone entries. Has a hard shot from the point, but doesn’t utilize it often enough and takes too long to load up when under pressure from defenders. Competes hard on the defensive end and shows advanced understanding of his positioning, anticipating plays from the offense well and using his long reach to disrupt plays along the wall. Does well to use his strength to his advantage in dirty areas of the ice. He moves well through the neutral zone and utilizes good skating ability to keep a good gap on the backcheck and slow down the forecheck. He is very mediocre at transitioning the puck up the ice and lacks any ability to creatively advance the puck or create his own offense. Needs to improve his offensive output. He’s a defender with pro potential and the opportunity to grow into a two-way force if he can continue to improve his decision-making with the puck.
