This is the second draft that Bucheler is draft eligible as a stay-at-home conservative defenseman that needs a lot of development to be drafted. His skating is sub-par; when he tries to complete a spin move, his spin looks rusty. He has a solid stride, but he often gets burned by speedy wingers as his backwards skating is quite slow and leaves him vulnerable. While his speed can be sluggish, he transitions well from forwards to backwards. He tends to find himself out of position in his own end, which gives the competition an edge. If he is going to play a stay-at-home game, he needs to make sure he stays at home. However, he is not only physical in his own end but in all three zones and can be tough to play against along the boards. He needs to work on collecting passes and controlling the puck as he sometimes has issues with puck control and trapping accurate passes with his stick blade. He is not a defenseman who will bring the puck up the ice. Instead, he is a pass first defenseman, who will feed the puck to someone else. While he generally demonstrates crisp quality passes, he does have some issues with his stretch passes and could improve his accuracy. While his stretch passing is a concern, he does have a solid behind-the-back pass off the boards. In the offensive zone, he frequently parks himself in front of the net and likes to deflect pucks.
