A feast-or-famine forward who has always had some consistency issues and while they still haven’t disappeared, he’s starting to figure out how to put his stamp on every game. A lot of that starts with his skating improvements as he’s added a half step that makes him tougher to contain. His stride has always looked solid from a mechanics standpoint, but it has taken a bit for the speed and urgency to catch up and he still needs to improve his overall skating. His vision and mental speed with possession is top notch. He is an excellent passer with the creativity to find unique targets and the execution to find hit teammates with crisp movement. He shows an enhanced ability to feather passes through or over sticks and makes smart reads with the puck. His shot selection and execution style need to improve, though he has the shot velocity and power to be a scoring threat. Sometimes he can be too hesitant to shoot and misses the net too often. His strong frame and solid base allow him to be very effective playing a power-based game. He drives the net-front hard and is tough to slow down with a head of steam. He brings that same grit and sandpaper on the defensive but is otherwise average in his own end and lacks consistent effort on the backcheck. A polarizing player with high potential though not lacking skill, he needs to work on sustaining pressure and churning out consistent effort to make an impact.
