While Clarke won’t blow you away with his skating, he has a high hockey IQ and great vision. He possesses a quick first step and keeps his feet moving, but otherwise his skating needs improvement. A very cerebral player, he thinks and plays the game at a high level. Combines playmaking ability with a nose for the net. His shot is at an elite level and he can get it off with dangerous speed and has the versatility to change it up. A natural goal scorer, he always finds a way to be at the right spot at the right time. He has great instincts as to where to position himself to take advantage of rebounds and he always seems to get himself open for passes in the offensive zone. Has soft hands and a nice toe drag, which he uses to attempt to get separation, but isn’t as effective in traffic. While he is a threat in the offensive zone, his work in the other two zones needs improvement. Generally, he doesn’t seem to activate into the play quick enough and is often the trailing man through the neutral zone to the defensive zone, resulting in odd-man rushes against. Needs to improve on keeping pace with the play in the defensive zone, but does win his fair share of board battles. Not overly strong, but never gives up in a puck battle.
